Our experienced local guides, carefully planned itineraries, and personalized service ensure your journey is safe, comfortable, and enjoyable from beginning to end. Your adventure starts with a scenic drive from Kathmandu to Machha Khola, passing through terraced hillsides, traditional villages, and beautiful river valleys. From Machha Khola, the trekking trail follows the Budhi Gandaki River through charming Gurung villages, lush rhododendron and pine forests, cascading waterfalls, and suspension bridges decorated with colorful Buddhist prayer flags. At the village of Lokpa, the route leaves the main Manaslu Circuit and enters the peaceful Tsum Valley. Here, you'll immediately notice the valley's tranquil atmosphere and strong spiritual character. Ancient mani walls, beautifully carved chortens, fluttering prayer flags, and traditional stone villages create an unforgettable Himalayan setting. The warm hospitality of the local people makes every stop along the trail even more memorable.
One of the highlights of the trek is visiting the sacred Mu Gompa, the largest monastery in Tsum Valley, where monks continue centuries-old Buddhist traditions. You'll also explore the peaceful Gumba Lungdang Monastery, beautifully situated on a hillside with magnificent mountain views. An optional excursion to Ganesh Himal Base Camp rewards trekkers with spectacular panoramas of Ganesh Himal, Himalchuli, Shringi Himal, and several surrounding snow-capped peaks. After exploring the hidden valley, the trail rejoins the famous Manaslu Circuit, passing through picturesque villages such as Namrung, Lho, Sama Gaun, and Samdo. These villages provide excellent opportunities for acclimatization while offering breathtaking views of Mount Manaslu (8,163m), the world's eighth-highest mountain. The ultimate highlight is crossing the legendary Larke La Pass, one of Nepal's most spectacular high mountain passes, where panoramic Himalayan views make every challenging step worthwhile.
The trek concludes with a scenic descent through alpine meadows and forests to Dharapani before returning to Kathmandu or continuing to Pokhara. With fewer crowds than many of Nepal's popular trekking routes, the Tsum Valley with Manaslu Circuit Trek offers a truly authentic Himalayan experience. Is a Guide or Porter Necessary?
Yes, hiring a licensed trekking guide is mandatory for the Tsum Valley with Manaslu Circuit Trek. Under the regulations introduced by the Nepal Government in April 2023, all foreign trekkers are required to be accompanied by a licensed guide when trekking in the Manaslu and Tsum Valley region. As both areas are designated Restricted Areas, independent trekking is not permitted. Trekkers must also obtain the necessary restricted area permits and conservation permits through a registered and government-authorized trekking company. Although hiring a porter is optional, it is highly recommended to make your trekking experience more comfortable and enjoyable. A porter carries up to 25–30 kg of luggage shared between two trekkers, allowing each person to hike with only a lightweight daypack containing daily essentials such as water, snacks, extra clothing, and personal items. This significantly reduces physical strain, especially on long trekking days and during the challenging crossing of Larke La Pass (5,106m).
At Desire Adventures, we provide experienced, government-licensed trekking guides who are knowledgeable about the region's culture, trails, weather conditions, and altitude safety. Our friendly and hardworking porters ensure your luggage is transported safely, allowing you to fully appreciate the stunning Himalayan scenery, rich Tibetan Buddhist culture, and unforgettable adventure with greater comfort and peace of mind.
How Difficult is the Tsum Valley with Manaslu Circuit Trek?
The Tsum Valley with Manaslu Circuit Trek is considered a moderately challenging to strenuous Himalayan adventure, making it best suited for trekkers with a good level of physical fitness and a spirit of adventure. The trek involves walking approximately 6 to 8 hours each day over diverse terrain, including steep ascents and descents, rocky mountain trails, suspension bridges, forest paths, and remote high-altitude landscapes. As the journey progresses, you will also cross the spectacular Larke La Pass (5,106m), one of Nepal's most scenic and rewarding high mountain passes. Although the trek reaches elevations above 5,000 meters, no technical climbing or mountaineering experience is required. However, the combination of long trekking days, rugged terrain, and high altitude makes proper preparation essential. A reasonable level of cardiovascular fitness, endurance, and regular physical exercise before your trip will greatly enhance your trekking experience.
Our carefully planned itinerary includes gradual altitude gain and dedicated acclimatization days to help your body adjust safely to the higher elevations and reduce the risk of altitude sickness. Accompanied by our experienced, government-licensed trekking guides, who closely monitor your health and pace throughout the journey, you can trek with confidence and peace of mind. With the right preparation, a positive attitude, and professional support, the Tsum Valley with Manaslu Circuit Trek is an achievable and immensely rewarding adventure, offering unforgettable mountain scenery, rich cultural experiences, and the satisfaction of completing one of Nepal's most spectacular and less-traveled trekking routes.
What is the Best Time to Trek the Tsum Valley with Manaslu Circuit?
The best time to trek the Tsum Valley with Manaslu Circuit is during spring (March to May) and autumn (mid-September to mid-December). These seasons offer stable weather, comfortable temperatures, clear skies, and the best mountain views, creating ideal conditions for trekking. In spring, the hills are covered with blooming rhododendrons and colorful wildflowers, while the clear skies reveal spectacular views of Manaslu, Ganesh Himal, Himalchuli, and other Himalayan peaks. Autumn is Nepal's most popular trekking season, featuring dry trails, excellent visibility, crisp mountain air, and pleasant daytime temperatures, making it perfect for crossing the magnificent Larke La Pass (5,106m).
Although the trek is possible in winter, cold temperatures and heavy snowfall can make the pass challenging. The summer monsoon (June to August) brings frequent rain, slippery trails, and limited mountain views, making it the least favorable season. For the most enjoyable experience, we highly recommend trekking in spring or autumn.
How Cold Does It Get?
Temperatures on the Tsum Valley with Manaslu Circuit Trek vary with the season and altitude. During spring (March–May) and autumn (mid-September–mid-December), daytime temperatures range from 15–25°C in the lower regions, while higher areas such as Larke La Pass (5,106m) can drop to -10°C to -18°C at night. Summer (June–August) is generally warmer but brings frequent rainfall and slippery trails, whereas winter (late December–February) is the coldest season, with temperatures around Larke La Pass falling as low as -20°C. To stay warm and comfortable throughout the trek, we recommend packing layered clothing, a quality down jacket, warm gloves, a hat, and a suitable sleeping bag, especially for the higher elevations.
Recommended equipment includes:
- Waterproof trekking boots
- Warm down jacket
- Sleeping bag (-15°C or lower)
- Thermal base layers
- Fleece jacket
- Waterproof jacket and trousers
- Trekking poles
- Warm gloves
- Wool hat
- Sun hat
- UV sunglasses
- Headlamp
- Water bottles or hydration bladder

As the road turns more rugged, the scenery becomes even more captivating with cascading waterfalls and steep cliffs lining the way. We’ll also pass by Tatopani, a natural hot spring, where you can take a quick dip if time permits. The trail undulates with a mix of ascents and descents, eventually leading us to Jagat, a picturesque Gurung village with stone houses and a warm community spirit.
