Trek Overview:
The Manaslu Circuit Trek spans 11 days, beginning and ending in Kathmandu. The journey gradually ascends through the Budhi Gandaki Valley before reaching the remote Tibetan-influenced villages near the border. You’ll cross the mighty Larkya La Pass and descend into the lush forests of the Annapurna region, finishing in Dharapani.
Day-by-Day Itinerary:
Day 1: Drive from Kathmandu to Machha Khola (930m/3,050ft)
The adventure begins with a scenic drive from Kathmandu to Machha Khola. You’ll pass terraced hillsides, roaring rivers, and rural villages as you follow the Budhi Gandaki River northward. It’s a long journey, but the changing scenery keeps it captivating.
Day 2: Trek from Machha Khola to Jagat (1,340m/4,385ft)
Your first trekking day takes you through subtropical forests and across several suspension bridges. The trail gradually ascends through small Gurung and Magar villages, ending in Jagat, a charming village with stone-paved streets and terraced farms.
Day 3: Jagat to Deng (2,095m/6,871ft)
Today, you’ll hike deeper into the narrow gorge of the Budhi Gandaki River, passing waterfalls, mani walls, and prayer flags. The terrain becomes more rugged as you approach Deng, a quiet village nestled between hills and cliffs.
Day 4: Deng to Namrung (2,900m/9,510ft)
The trail climbs steadily today, and the scenery begins to shift dramatically. Pine and fir forests lead to high hills and scattered settlements. As you approach Namrung, stunning views of Ganesh Himal and Mt. Himalchuli come into sight.
Day 5: Namrung to Samagaun (3,500m/11,480ft)
One of the most scenic days of the trek. You’ll pass through picturesque villages like Lihi and Lho, with incredible views of Manaslu (8,163m). Samagaun, a traditional Tibetan-style village surrounded by glaciers and high peaks, will be your base for two nights.
Day 6: Acclimatization Day at Samagaun
Rest and explore. Take a short hike to Pungyen Gompa, or a more demanding day trip to Manaslu Base Camp (4,800m) if conditions allow. This day is vital for altitude acclimatization and gives you time to absorb the beauty of the region.
Day 7: Samagaun to Samdo (3,690m/12,103ft)
A short but visually rewarding trek as you move higher into alpine landscapes. You’ll follow glacial rivers and pass yak pastures before arriving at Samdo, a Tibetan refugee village just a day away from the high pass.
Day 8: Samdo to Dharmashala (4,450m/14,596ft)
Today you trek to Dharmashala (also called Larkya Phedi), the last stop before crossing the pass. The trail is barren but majestic, and the elevation gain is significant. Rest well tonight- you’ll need energy for tomorrow’s big push.
Day 9: Cross Larkya La Pass (5,106m) – Trek to Bimtang (3,720m/12,201ft)
The highlight of the trek. You’ll start early to ascend the Larkya La Pass. The climb is challenging, but the panoramic views from the top, Himlung Himal, Cheo Himal, Annapurna II, and many more are awe-inspiring. After the summit, descend into the lush valley of Bimtang.
Day 10: Bimtang to Dharapani (1,860m)
A long descent through rhododendron and oak forests, with the landscape shifting from high mountains to warmer, greener terrain. After crossing rivers and small villages, you’ll arrive in Dharapani, where the trek concludes.
Day 11: Drive Back to Kathmandu (1,400m)
After breakfast, you’ll take a private jeep or shared vehicle back to Kathmandu. As the peaks fade behind you, take time to reflect on the incredible memories and sense of achievement from your Manaslu journey.
